After extreme weight loss, and other reasons, the skin of the abdomen and the lower back/flanks may become soft, stretchable, and tissue-like. This skin is not improved with exercise, topical medications/ointments, laser treatments or any other myriad of touted procedures. This skin must most often be surgically removed and tightened to achieve the result the person desires and for a long-lasting and natural-appearing result. These procedures are performed under general anesthesia using an incision low along the abdomen and/or lower back and the loose skin and fat is removed and the skin edges put together with fine sutures. Recovery usually takes one to two weeks and the swelling takes months to finally subside. The results, however, are commonly just outstanding because of the inability of the patient to tighten the skin themselves and surgery is the only way and it is a path that is usually more than worth to the patient to pursue. But tightening only the front of the male torso can result in an unsightly and deformed result. For this reason Dr. Tiller developed what he calls a "belt lipectomy" that tighten the skin all around the midsection resulting in a masculine appeareance and not the feminizing appearance all too often that results from a typical tummy tuck.
